UNICEF and Decent Jobs for Youth
UNICEF commits to creating One Million Opportunities for youth in Brazil
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has officially announced its commitment aimed at generating one million opportunities for skills development, employment, learning and apprenticeship for vulnerable young people aged 14 to 29 in Brazil. Launched in October 2020, this initiative is a collaborative effort that brings together UNICEF, young people, governments, the private sector, and civil society. Through a Public-Private-Youth Partnership (PPYP), the 1MiO initiative focuses on supporting diverse groups of youth, including ethnic-racial minorities, indigenous peoples, refugees, adolescents with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, girls in STEAM, public school students, young mothers, and victims of child labour. The commitment will be carried out through a digital platform that facilitates access to skills development, apprenticeships, internships, employment opportunities, and civic participation. The governance of this initiative involves collaboration with over 170 large companies and partnerships with 1,834 municipalities across Brazil.
The Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Decent Jobs for Youth was launched in 2016 as a UN system-wide effort, focusing on the youth employment challenge that is central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It has emerged as a global, multi-stakeholder initiative that brings together governments, social partners, the private sector, youth and civil society organizations, and others. They work together to share knowledge, leverage resources and take action at country and regional level, to support young people in accessing decent work and productive employment worldwide.
